It seems like an awful lot of damage for what actually happened. Was it the fragile Lotus, or was there an issue with the Armco? I can't remember.

From what I've read the barrier part of the armco broke, and the car hit one of the support posts.
Jackie Stewart's recollection of the aftermath of the crash is gut-wrenching. He went to see Rindt in the medical center (or whatever they had back then). He immediately knew Rindt was dead because his foot was severed and there wasn't any blood coming out of it. He went back to the garage, cried his eyes out, composed himself, went out on track and set fastest time, came back to the garage, and immediately started crying his eyes out again. Different times....

Yep, it's the Jacky Ickx/Jackie Oliver crash. Looked scary as hell, but they both escaped relatively unscathed.
