Do I need a steering wheel for the game?

Nope, but obviously it's much better if you've got one (even the cheapest thing going).

If you've got a PC capable of running F1 2011 - get rF2 as well :P.

And is the online community generally just trashy kids ramming into each other?

In F1 2011 or rF2?

Never tried online in F1 2011. In rF2 people generally try their best. Very few actual prats crashing on purpose. But still a lot of people with no skill, lol.

I wouldn't really recommend any of the Codemasters F1 games. Maybe if you can get it cheap, and want a game with the 2011 tracks and cars, then it'll keep you occupied for a little while.

As for playing online, it's probably decent on the PC. If you play it on X Box, expect to be rear ended by complete imbeciles at every single corner.

Invested in a Macbook Air and got my hands on a F1 2012. I'm impressed with how faithful the game is to the rules and the stewards. I edged Grosjean off the track and got a drive-through. Sometimes I get penalties for which I think are not my fault. The physics also feel quite good. The only thing missing is the damage model. This is the first Codemasters game I played since Colin McRae 2005 and nothing's changed in that respect. You hit the wall slightly and the car is completely intact. I can live with this though, so I'll be playing the game for quite a while

Ah yes, you just need to go to the settings screen - you must have it set to "Montoya". Just change it to Schumacher mode and you can do whatever you want.

Alonso mode is pretty fun, you can blackmail team managers, lie in press conferences and then be lauded for how 'complete' you are. So lifelike!
